The Rumi House in Virginia hosted a commemorative gathering on Friday marking the third anniversary of the passing of Wasif Bakhtari, the renowned poet, thinker, philosopher, translator, and one of the most influential figures of contemporary Persian‑Dari literature. The event brought together writers, scholars, and admirers of Bakhtari’s work to reflect on his enduring intellectual and artistic legacy.

Opening the ceremony, Zabiḥ Fitrat welcomed attendees and outlined the objectives of the program. He reviewed Bakhtari’s life and contributions, emphasizing his pivotal role in shaping modern Persian‑Dari poetry, literary criticism, translation, and research. Fitrat noted that honoring Bakhtari’s legacy aligns with the cultural mission of the House of Mawlana, which in recent years has organized several initiatives dedicated to preserving and promoting the works of prominent literary figures.

Literary Analysis and Interpretation

Writer and university professor Naseer Arian delivered an analytical presentation on the role of signs and symbolism in understanding poetry, with a particular focus on Bakhtari’s oeuvre. He argued that contrary to common assumptions, Bakhtari’s poetry is not obscure; rather, it requires familiarity with symbolic structures and internal poetic relations. With such knowledge, Arian said, readers can appreciate the precision and harmony with which Bakhtari selects words, images, and signs. Arian also highlighted Bakhtari’s stature within the broader Persian Dari literary sphere, including Iran’s literary community, and stressed that efforts to introduce his work across the Persian-speaking world remain insufficient. He called for expanded academic and cultural engagement with Bakhtari’s writings.

In another segment, writer and poet Ahmad Maroof Kabiri spoke about Bakhtari’s distinguished place in literature and culture. He described Bakhtari as a multifaceted literary figure whose contributions to poetry, translation, and intellectual discourse continue to resonate. Kabiri discussed several of Bakhtari’s works, including The Ladder of Heaven and Several Earthenware Pieces on the Crystal Counter of Tomorrow, elaborating on their linguistic, philosophical, and artistic qualities. He underscored Bakhtari’s refined approach to translation as a bridge connecting Persian literature with global thought.

Writer and researcher Simgar Bakhtari offered personal recollections from years of friendship with Bakhtari, portraying him as a figure of humility, sharp intellect, exceptional memory, and deep sensitivity toward the Persian language. He noted that Bakhtari’s commitment to linguistic and intellectual refinement extended beyond his writings into everyday life. Simgar Bakhtari also examined the role of myth and philosophy in Bakhtari’s poetry, explaining how myth functions as a foundational element in his work and how philosophical concepts are woven into his poetic expression.

The event concluded with an open discussion, allowing participants to share reflections and pose questions on various aspects of Bakhtari’s poetry, thought, translation, and scholarly legacy. The gathering was warmly received by attendees and served as a meaningful tribute to one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Persian Dari literature.

The commemoration reaffirmed Wasif Bakhtari’s enduring influence—an intellectual sun from Bactria whose light continues to guide readers, scholars, and lovers of literature.
